3 steps to improve the behaviour of your team

default-16x9

Are you frustrated that your people aren’t doing things properly and you don’t know why? Do you feel that your staff are just constantly complaining and sucking up your time or HR contact hours?

Are you at a place where you want to change the behaviour of your staff but can’t put your finger on how?

This is something I hear all the time from business owners, managers and HR professionals. But when was the last time you asked them “why”? Or better yet stopped to make a note of the reasons why?

If you keep complaining or ignoring your staff’s behaviour then it will never change, and you will continue to suffer loss of productivity and business performance.

  1. - Start by trying to understand the cause of the behaviour. Observe what is happening in the team, write down the key points that people are saying.
  2.
  3. - Don’t try and make sense of your people’s behaviour. Their behaviour is a reflection of what they instinctively know how to do, at that moment in time (think of the fight or flight response).
  4.
  5. - Take action! If you want to be an effective leader you need to resolve the issue. I have worked in various businesses for many years (small, medium, large and government) and to this day I am yet to see a leader step up and resolve issues promptly and assertively.

All too often, managers and leaders ignore what is happening in their business or teams in the hope that their people will sort it out themselves.

On the flipside are those managers that not only ignore the problem but start getting tough on their staff for trying to tell them what is wrong.

These are sure-fire ways to get yourself a dysfunctional team and produce frustration and anger.
