I once read about how various methods of learning input led to varying degrees of knowledge retention, i.e. straighforward lecturing led to a low percentage of retention whereas practical application of skills led to a higher retention rate. Does anyone know the various percentage rates? Do you know of any similar research?

  1. What do you mean?
From a personal point of view there are so many variable factors in the learning process that I wouldn’t think percentages would help – learners are not cattle! The best strategy is to get to know your learners and adapt effectively. I’ll expand on this if you like via E-Mail.

Peter Honey has a very useful questionnaire and supporting literature on 4 main learning styles. If you haven’t seen it, it is well worth looking at. Jenny

Simon, Yes there was some research done into this by an American University. I have, somewhere, the results as a triangle, and will be happy to email it to you.
