Estimating Course Development Time

default-16x9

Despite having had a Training Department within the Company for some 11 years, we have never formalised the amount of time spent on Course Development. I now need to produce a set of Industry "Standards" to justify the time spent within the department on developing new courses, modifying and updating existing courses, and eventually, producing web-based courses from existing material. Each course is currently under the control of a Subject Matter Expert, although this may not be the case in the future! Pointers to any guidelines on other sites or sources on "Development hours vs Presentation Hours and Preparation Hours" would be welcomed so that I can quote these to defend my corner!

  1. Time tables
    Hi Peter

It depends on the deliver methods. As a rough guide I’ve used the following – they are estimates as it varies greatly – especially if the development is in reality a modification of existing materials. These times include all facets – syllabus development, slides, trainer guide, work books etc.

Standard chalk & talk delivery – approx 8-10 hours for every hour delivered

CD ROM/multi-media 18-25 hrs for every hour delivered – not assuming time to capture and fine editing of video & audio material

    Distance learning – 15-25 hours

Things to consider – how experienced at developing training materials is the subject matter expert? How ‘new’ is a new course – much of what we do is rehashing old stuff.
