Silver Surfers’ day aims to train golden oldies in the ways of the web

May 23 sees the return of Silver Surfers’ Day (SSD) - an event aimed at helping nearly 10 million over-50s to get to grips with the internet.

Run by Digital Unite since 2002, this year’s training event falls on the final day of Adult Learners’ Week.

Participants are being encouraged to hold their own Silver Surfers' Day IT taster days across the country to help train older people to learn such things as how to surf the net, chat on social networking sites, learn the basics of blogging, go online shopping or use an i-player.

As one of the many initiatives, Virgin Media, sponsors of the SSD Learning Zone, are investing in training older people to become 'online citizens' by offering free equipment, superfast broadband and training for 17 sheltered housing schemes in Virgin Media broadband areas in Britain.
