There's been a lot of press recently about the future skills shortages in IT. But what exactly are the skills that will be most in demand in the next 3+ years? If I were recommending a course of training to someone wanting to exploit this area, what would it be?

Internet database skills
I would say that the most important advanced level IT skills would be internet database programming, for example setting up shopping websites, such as amazon.com, or jungle.com, using cgi or some other complicated crap. This is where the most high paying jobs are going to be available.
This is just my opinion, I would be glad to hear anyone elses ideas.
e-commerce not big money
Unless you own shares in the company for which you are programming then you are not going to be earning a vast sum of money, and even if you do own shares that bubble will likely burst before you get to take advantage of them.
In my experience the kind of people who make huge sums of money in the IT industry are high end programmers (specialist applications within the corporate sector) and database administrators.
Skills shortage, an overview.
The skills shortage in IT has existed for some time and will do so into the foreseeable future. The skills requisits at any given time and any geographic location, change. Recently (1 year ago) it was Windows NT with Cobol popping up because of Y2k. Today it is everything Web, Java, cgi, perl as well as e-commerce strategy. Tomorrow with the popularity of everything mobile in Europe try WAP skills. The IT sector globally is starved of qualified and EXPERIENCED personnel in all areas, from database developers, network analysts and project managers. Trying to fill this gap is the remit of IT specialists, however, industry generally is in an even worse condition in obtaining staff who have basic IT skills. This is the area for the general training firm but even here it is a Catch 22 in that it is sometimes difficult to find the trainers because of the shortage. The IT newspaper that covers this is “Computing”.
