The Times is reporting that key workers in the British social structure such as police officers, nursing staff and teachers are likely to end up homeless and jobless unless the government acts soon, according to the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).
The CIH will tell the government that professional but poorly paid workers are being forced into a housing trap. They do not qualify for a place at the top of a council waiting list because they earn too much, but they cannot afford to buy new homes because their income is too low.
The Institute's policy director John Perry will tell the annual conference in Harrogate today that whilst 80,000 new rented homes are needed each year only 30,000 are being built.
