We have about 100 PC users in our company who are located in HO and 12 branches spread throughout New Zealand. The skill level in Microsoft applications and Internet use is average at best, with only a handful of highly competent users. We are currently going through the debate of whether to outsource the applications training or use a few of our highly competent users as in-house trainers (one is already a trainer). What experiences have people had with this type of thing in a geographically spread company?

In house or external?
The best way we have found is to use both, the in house trainers can be complimented by external sources in order that your organisation obtains the best. Cascade the training across all sites by getting a standard competancy based user matrix made from day one so all users are being told the same things and there is little difference in the standards.
With over 50 users an internal trainer would need to be dedicated solely to training and we have found in the UK and the USA that the internal trainers tend to be competant users but not trained to train others. This is vital!
