Employee Handbook Topics?

I have been asked to suggest a topic list/Table of Contents for an employee handbook for a small gymnastics company (10 People).

The company has rules, although nothing was in writing, and due to some people taking advantage 'of a good thing' the client would like to put everything in writing -- adding more structure to a growing organization.

This will be very basic and address topics such as:

* Company Mission
* vacation policy
* sick days
* reporting to work 15 minutes before a class
* personal phone calls
* benefits for part-time and full time employees (and what constitutes part- and full-time
* parking
* dress code
* Poor performance/warning policy
* reasons for immediate dismissal

What other topics would you include? What has your table of contents looked like e.g. clustering miscellaneous information?

  1. if such a document is needed, there are bigger problems
    I’m drawn to suggest both Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People) and Semler (Maverick) would say that there are larger issues than simply taking advantage of “unwritten rules.”

    When workers are happy with their environment, and are keen to further the company because it furthers their own careers, they seldom “bend” the rules.

    Short of summarising both books, I can only hope you are familiar with them… If not, they are strongly recommended as important reading.

    We are a fairly large organisation and I have just been putting together a new employee handbook. It is fairly standard, but intended to provide new and existing employees with useful company information and a feel for the ‘way we do things around here’.     Hi Andrea,
    The handbook contents looks a bit like a list of “thou shalt nots”. You mentioned that it is a gymnastics company, aspects of protective behaviours (avoiding beaviour that may compromise you as an instructor)may give the sense of a company looking after its employees. Policies around harrassment may also be worthwhile. let me Know if you would like to discuss protective behaviours further.
