Internet Usage

default-16x9

'The Internet currently has 900,000,000 users and 800,000,000 pages of information'.

This is me quoting myself training delegates during an Internet Introduction Course. The only problem is that I am not entirely sure that this infomation is completely correct. It is gleaned from various sources but I still remain sceptical.

Is anyone able to tell me or point me in the right direction to find out this information. I am aware that the Internet is in a massive state of flux but any advice re: page/user numbers would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Some website addresses;
    http://www.euromktg.com/globstats/– breakdown of languages spoken and some basic stats. Puts the number at more like 220M users. It’s a reasonable estimate.

    With reference to the number of pages served per day, well this is 100% impossible to calculate, even as a rough guess. You will never get a more than 60% accurate estimate, making it pointless.

    Another interesting site is http://www.emarketer.com/estats/which tracks stats for marketing purposes. They suggest that the US now has more than 100M users, with that being approx 50% of the total volume of internet users.

    You also have to remember that approx 30% of that figure are under the age of 18, so that brings the useable number down to roughly 130M.

    You can buy the full report online, if you are into e-commerce! *g*

    Hope this helps,

  2. Pages of internet ‘stuff’
    Re; number of pages on the internet

    I haven’t found anything relating to this yet… the closest you will ever come to an accurate guess would be from one of the bigger search engines.

    Of course the lines for this are becoming increasingly blurred with new technology too. Quite often pages and websites are no longer ‘static’ and thus have no fixed pages that can be indexed or counted. Instead they are dynamic, having content that is pulled out of databases at the users request.

    I will keep an eye out and post any findings here.
