Where do I start

My project is to revue working practices in a small engineering company ( where I work ) to identify any shortfalls in production,communication,commitment of employees,and to introduce a structured training program for the benifit of the company and staff. We total 20 employees with a range of skills and the equipment we use ranges from manual machines that require high skill levels to more modern computerised machines that require high skills to program and set but achieve larger output with more cost effective labour.Any help at all would be appreciated

  1. Using EFQM Assessments for productivity/efficiency
    You need a framework to the review that will integrate each of the areas you have identified and link them to policy and strategic objectives, including customer needs and expectations.

    You might consider our Foundation for Excellence Assessment based on the criterion of the EFQM Excellence Model. The results of the assessment, expressed as STRENGTHS and AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT, provide you with a great deal of detail to address on the key issues. These key issues can be brought under the controlling structure of a Balanced Scorecard so that many improvement projects and initiatives can be managed comfortably at the same time.

  2. It may not need a structured training programme
    Hmm, having read your problem I think you might have jumped straight to a solution without working out what you are trying to do. I say this because of the leap from identifying shortfalls in… and commitment of staff to introducing a structured training programme! hope I’m not speaking out of line but by making this leap you run the danger of denying yourself other solutions. The way I look at this is dead simple . Its based on well respected change management stuff. It goes like this 1.Where are we now (the story so far) 2.Where do we want to be (performance, morale etc) and 3. How do we get there (of which a structured training programme is only one solution). Hope this is useful even if it means less work for us trainers and consultants!
