A fifth of 18 - 34-year-olds believe that a lack of skills is stifling their careers.

According to figures released by learndirect many 18 – 34-year-olds felt a lack of skills in English, maths, IT and management was holding them back in the workplace and preventing them making the most of career opportunities.

Adults further into their careers who took part in the learndirect survey also felt a lack of skills was holding them back. Over 10% 35 – 54-year-olds said they needed to improve their skills for work, and among 55 – 64-year-olds , one in 20 felt the same.

The survey results coincide with a new awards scheme to recognise the achievements of those studying with learndirect.

Launching the Awards, minister for skills Phil Hope said: "The learndirect Achievement Awards are a celebration of learning, recognising the achievements of people learning with learndirect, businesses training with learndirect, and the centres supporting them."

Nominations for the awards close on 16 March 2007. The regional finalists will be announced in June 2007 and invited to a national final in October 2007.
