Editor's Note
=============

Dear TrainingZONE member,

Thank you! Several months ago, we were informed that various
users had nominated TrainingZONE for the Yell Awards 2000. These
prestigious annual awards are now in their fifth year and are
intended to reflect excellence in each of ten different
categories of internet sites, leading ultimately to a Best UK
Site award.

In April, we were shortlisted in the final 10 sites as Best UK
Business-to-Business Site, alongside BT, Yellow Pages, Thorn
Lighting and the Henley Centre. Last week, TrainingZONE beat all
these contenders to become one of two finalists for the Award.
We're busy polishing up the site in time for the final awards
ceremony on 11 July. This is a huge endorsement and recognition
not only for TrainingZONE as a premier business website, but also
for the 60+ staff at Sift who create our eleven online
professional communities. We'll bring you the final result, just
as soon as we know it!

Training versus salary debate rumbles on
----------------------------------------
TrainingZONE promises to try and avoid the debate from now on,
but notes that in yet another survey that the training versus
salary debate is still alive and kicking. The latest survey from
e-Learning, IT and business skills training company KnowledgePool
rather sensibly finds that, actually, most employees would like both.

TrainingZONE workshop: Working effectively as a virtual team

As 'remote working' becomes an increasingly common aspect of the
way in which we work, how can we sustain a sense of real team-
working? And for team leaders and managers who have
responsibility for staff whom they may rarely see, how can proper
monitoring, workload management and accountability be maintained?

Staff from the Coverdale Consultancy will be running this
'virtual' online workshop, which will cover issues including:
* How can people communicate and co-operate when they don't have
face-to-face contact?
* How can the sense of isolation be combatted?
* How can virtual teams be managed most effectively?
* What strategies can you adopt when remote staff and teams are
not working properly?

for a small business or company with a limited training budget,

development.' The article can be found at

Any answers
-----------
What's troubling TrainingZONE readers this week?

Kevin Moore wants to know what became of John Goddard:

As part of our motivation course, we use a guy called John
Goddard as a shining example of achieving your goals.
As a 15-year-old he wrote a list of the 127 things he wanted to
do before he died. I know how he got on up to a few years ago,
but I desperately want to find out:
a) If he's still alive
b) How he's doing on his list

Absolutely ANY info very gratefully received.

Other pressing questions needing an answer:

- A few questions from Steve Ager about distance learning MBAs,
including accreditation
- Matt Bownds is looking for feedback materials for call centre
staff
- Phil Knott seeks a business simulation exercise for new retail
managers
- Mike Ellison needs good examples of the dreaded evaluation
sheets

If you can answer any of these, or have a question of your own,
just go to https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/anyanswersand use the
Comments feature at the end of each question to relay your
answers direct to the questioner.

COMMUNITY FEATURES
==================
Special feature this week: focus on WebWatch
--------------------------------------------
TrainingZONE scours the web on a daily basis for all things
interesting in the world of training, and adds them to an ever-
expanding library of the best training and learning resource.
What's more, visit WebWatch and we'll take you straight to the link
itself - no struggling to key in complicated web addresses required!
You can check out the latest hot links at

We're always interested to receive your recommendations too -
mailto:editor@trainingzone.co.uk.

This week, a slightly extended WebWatch features the shortly-to-
be relaunched IPD site, complete with (hopefully temporary!)
technical hitches, and a chance to win a laptop courtesy of Xebec
McGraw-Hill and Training Magazine.

BAOL quality mark should help expansion in open learning
--------------------------------------------------------
With technology fuelling a steady increase in distance learning,
achieving consistent standards across the range of training
available is an issue of growing importance. The British
Association of Open Learning aims to promote quality and best
practice in open, flexible and distance learning and has
developed a quality mark for organisations who wish to have the
standard of their training materials, guidance and learner
suppport recognised.
http://www.baol.co.uk

New enhanced IPD site needs a registration
------------------------------------------
The IPD's website is being re-organised to provide visitors with
a more personalised service. All visitors to the site are being
asked to register their details before they can access the site.
TrainingZONE has however encountered a few problems with this
process, apparently due to a slow server at the IPD's end - the
IPD say that the problem is due to the sheer number of people
registering.

Complete online learning questionnaire and win a laptop!
--------------------------------------------------------
Xebec McGraw-Hill and Training Magazine are currently conducting
a survey into the implementation, use and impact on trainers of
learning online, and are offering respondents the chance to win a
multimedia laptop.
You can download a copy of the survey at
http://www.xebec-online.com/uk/online/survey2000.htm

Lifelong learning: OU needs your views
--------------------------------------
The Open University and the University of East London are looking
for contributors to an online discussion they are hosting into
lifelong learning. Topics under discussion will include "what
does lifelong learning mean?" and "what should we be doing to
support lifelong learning?". The responses will be fed into a
meeting at the University in July. Anyone with an interest in
the subject can log in to the debates, which launch on June 19th.
Once up-and-running, the discussion area will be available at

Management advice from Jesus, Atilla the Hun and Don Corleone...
----------------------------------------------------------------
Last week's Personnel Today magazine carried a lighthearted look
at management books. By all accounts, to gain gravitas in the
world of management theorising, the best thing to do is to die,
leaving behind a portfolio of revered management theory.
Personnel Today cites the likes of Attilla the Hun (Victory
Secrets of Attilla the Hun, Wess Roberts), Jesus (The Leadership
Wisdom of Jesus, Charles Manz) and, among the more unlikely
contenders the Wizard of Oz (The Oz Principle, Connors,
Smith and Hickman) as those who have been successfully giving
advice from beyond the grave. To subscribe, visit
