Last week's feature article on current trends in online learning provoked a flurry of responses which you can read and react to at
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=8057&d=1
Amongst the comments are a request for independent assessment of the different technologies available and a plea not to rush headlong into another new fad.

The news over the past few days has included important announcements in Gordon Brown's budget review concerning further funding for training and employment programmes. These are covered in our News section below. Also this week, we've added several new resources to the Toolkit, all of which are free for you to download and use in your own work. The Any Answers? page is generating lots of questions and answers to practical problems. Read on to find out how you can post your own question direct onto the site.

New articles on LearningBuzz
----------------------------
A series of new articles have been published on the excellent LearningBuzz website this month. Virtually everything on this site is worth reading. Three items caught my eye in particular. 'Work Based Learning: A New Eden - and its Serpent' by Derek Portwood examines the dichotomy of work and learning and the inner contradictions of work based learning. 'Ways of Learning' by Bill Lucas gives some tips as to how we can improve our learning. 'Networks for Learning' by Michael Pearn introduces the benefits of learning through networks.

SoftwareSource
--------------
People Management magazine has launched a new service with its own website designed to assist HR professionals and others access the most appropriate computer software for their needs. The site provides information and reviews on a wide range of products, together with product news and an online ordering service. We found several examples of 'missing' software when using the search facility, but the catalogues seem to be relatively comprehensive.

The growth of the Internet
--------------------------
The number of documents posted on the World Wide Web grows by a million a day and is estimated to reach eight billion by 2002. More than 200 million people around the world now log on and the net has become the fastest-growing communication tool ever invented.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_480000/480102.stm

Meanwhile, as forecast here three weeks ago, BT has announced a reduction in the call charges which it levies on all Internet Service Providers in the UK. With effect from mid-December, the new rate will be 0.97p/minute. In theory, this could mean that dial-up Internet access will cost no more than 1p/minute - but it remains to be seen how much of this reduction is passed on by ISPs in this fiercely competitive market. At least it's a (small) step towards genuinely free Internet access.

Laterooms.com challenges lastminute.com
----------------------------------------
LateRooms, the UK's largest online database of late availability hotel rooms has gone live offering 50,000 reduced room rates, some offering savings up to 80 percent on the normal rate. For the business traveller called away at short notice LateRooms means they can now book a better hotel than their expenses would normally allow. While those able to take a holiday break at a moments notice can stay in four star splendour at a one star price.

More funding for employment and training programmes
---------------------------------------------------
Gordon Brown's annual Budget review, delivered last Tuesday, contained several announcements which will impact the employment, training and HR fields. Following pilot projects in various parts of the country, the New Deal programme is now to be rolled out to all those aged 25 and over. This announcement effectively means that all jobseekers aged 18 to 65 can be offered routes back to training and employment through the New Deal. There is to be a revamp of JobCentres and this too is likely to be a programme rolled out across the country. Finally, funding is to be made available to enable 50,000 adults to benefit from basic IT skills training.
