Aerospace and defence group BAe Systems is expected to announce more than 3,000 redundancies on Thursday as part of a rationalisation resulting from last years merger with Marconi.
The company has already made more than 750 managers redundant, and the extra layoffs are expected to contribute to the targeted cost savings of £275 million annually.
National officer of the MSF Union, John Wall, said "The job losses will be very significant. But we hope that the numbers neither endanger the business nor are so great that they cannot be managed on a voluntary basis. This company is one of the few British companies which is a world-leading high-tech manufacturer, and in the light of what is happening in manufacturing, this news is concerning."
