On November 1st a computer virus was spread to PCs via DVD for the first time. The virus was included in an episode of popular cartoon Power Puff Girls.
Warner Brother released the latest episode of Power Puff Girls - “Meet the Beat” - last month and is reported to have sold rapidly. The stow away virus is the old timer FunLove. Back in 1999 FunLove stopped Dell production for two days. Microsoft and Hewlett Packard have also felt the wrath of FunLove.
The most likely way the virus managed to worm its way onto a DVD was by a developer working on an infected machine suggests Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos Anti-Virus.
The good news is that FunLove is not very damaging and is it is easy to protect PCs against it. However the bad news is that once the virus gets into the network it will automatically spread between PCs and becomes very tricky to root out.
Warner Brothers have recalled all versions of the DVD were it has been sold. This does not include the UK but it may have been purchased online.
