Editor's Note
=============
Welcome to this special issue of the LearningWire which has been created to
support the 'Realising Your Potential' event organised by the Scottish
Council for Voluntary Organisations at the Murrayfield Conference Centre,
Edinburgh on 2/3 March 1999. This issue is being mailed to all those
delegates who registered their email address.

We'd like to introduce you to the TrainingZone - a free Internet resource
for people engaged in learning, training, coaching, staff and
organisational development. We call it "The learning community". Every
day we publish news and resources relevant to your work. There are
directories, downloadable resources, a specialised training-related search
engine, discussion forums, a huge section of training-related links, a
materials Toolkit, several microsites from related organisation, and
regular postings about relevant Internet sites. You can customise the site
and get it to alert you about news on topics of particular interest to you.
And it's free!

In addition, every Monday we issue LearningWire to all registered users
with a digest of news and updates about training, learning and development.
Again, no cost!

This special issue focuses on sites of special interest to delegates. It's
a sample of how TrainingZone can make your life easier. You can visit the
site now at
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk
or visit us on Stand 1 at the 'Realising Your Potential' event. See you there.

Editor, LearningWIRE and TrainingZONE

Keeping up to date
==================
Things are moving fast in Scotland. The election is just two months away
(May 6, if it's not already in your diary). You'll probably want to keep
your eye on several areas of policy development.

To watch what's happening around the new Scottish Parliament, see
http://www.scottish-devolution.org.uk
which starts with an introduction from Donald Dewar and goes on to give you
an updated guide to progress on the new parliament.

Of course, the Scottish Office maintains it's own extensive website at
http://www.scotland.gov.uk
where there are links to all the main Departments. Virtually all new
Scottish Office documents are now published online as soon as they become
publicly available, so you can save yourself a lot of money by downloading
the web version. There are directions on the page. For consultation
documents, there is normally a facility for responding online which can
save you time and trouble - and increase the range of responses. If you
want to watch all the new stories coming from the Scottish Office, you can
monitor
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/frame2n.htm
The 'front door' for the Education and Industry Department is at
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/structure/frame-ed.htm

Don't forget the extensive website maintained by SCVO itself. There's lots
of information here including copies of all reports, publications
catalogues, Third Force News, and training courses. The main news page is
at
http://www.sol.co.uk/s/scvo/news/news_f.htm
My only criticsm of this excellent site is that I wish SCVO would abandon
this convoluted web address and use www.scvo.org.uk (with a default to the
longer address if necessary). It already owns the domain name which is
used for staff emails!!!

Training and Learning
=====================
One of the more valuable resources for those involved in training and
education is the online Guide to Education and Training in Scotland (GETS)
which provides information about everything from nursery education through
to higher and post-qualifying education.
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/GETS/index.htm

You can't go far today without hearing about Lifelong Learning. There's an
excellent site which brings you all the relevant information, grants,
developments and links in this field. Every three months they also publish
an electronic newsletter to what's new and changing.
http://www.lifelonglearning.co.uk

Last year saw the founding of the Institute of Continuing Professional
Development. The Institute promotes the practice of CPD across all
professions. And, if you want, you can put 'MICPD' after your name if you
become a member! TrainingZone hosts the microsite for the ICPD at
http://www.icpd.co.uk

We regularly monitor several other sites which offer a wealth of useful
material for anyone engaged in training and learning. The Amererican
Society for Training and Developmen
t has an excellent website including
a human resource magazine, discussion forums and groups, coaching lists and
other useful resources. People Management' is the fortnightly magazine of
the Institute of Personnel and Development and each issue - including a
comprehensive classified jobs section - is published on line http://www.peoplemanagement.co.uk

And a site which is built and maintained in Scotland is run by Eric Begbie
of Changing Times in Alloa. The informative and lively UK Training Pages
can be found at
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/trainer/index.htm

Training Events
===============
Looking for a relevant training event for yourself or one of your staff?
Well, you could phone up for the brochures, but here are some online places
to start.

SCVO has an extensive training programme with a new callendar every six
months. You'll find a well designed site - with a friendly welcome from
Helen Cogan! - at
http://www.sol.co.uk/s/scvo/training/default.htm

For organisations making good use of volunteers, don't forget to follow the
best practice guidelines from Volunteer Development Scotland. Their
training programme is to be found at
http://www.vds.org.uk/Training.htm although it needed a bit of updating
when I last looked!

To look more widely at the range of training events currently available,
there are two major sites at
http://www.trainingpages.co.uk
http://www.talkingtraining.bt.com
http://www.trainingindex.co.uk (Note: this is a fee service)
TrainingZone will be launching its own Events directory shortly where you
will be able to post details of your own forthcoming events.

Exhibitors
==========
Finally, if you want a preview of some of the exhibitors at the 'Realising
Your Potential' event, why not take a peek at these:

Pavilion Publishing are the leading publishers of
books, manuals and resources related to health and social welfare. At
their stand will be information about the new series of Toolkit Manuals -
for Trainers, for Facilitators, for Managers.

Framework
are a long established group of consultants and trainers working in the
public sector. They've worked with more than 250 organisations in Scotland
on staff development, strategic reviews, project evaluations, management
development, etc.

Roger Greenaway
I'm not sure if he's coming, but don't miss visiting this excellent site to
see the range of resource materials about adventure education, experiential
learning and active reviewing materials.
