Brunel University's Lifelong Learning Centre has developed a new system for logging learning activities. The Lifelong Learning System can log the training and development of an individual or an organisation on an ongoing basis.

The Lifelong Learning Centre has created the Lifelong Learning System in partnership with local FE colleges, TECs and Chambers and with the help of a 6.8 million grant from ADAPT/ESF. The system includes a skills scanner (skills audit), area for action planning and an externally-verified Learning Log for each learner which they can take with them when they change jobs and which can hold details of any learning which the individual undertakes. This can be used to create a National Record of Achievement similar to that currently used in schools.

The system can be used to record any type of training, although Brunel also offer a number of online courses, including IT training, management courses. The demonstration available online only has a one learner's record currently accessible, so although the system is able to offer Training Needs Analysis tools and data analysis, it's difficult to see how the learner manager section would enable administration of an organisational training plan.

The Lifelong Learning Centre says that the ability to create an ongoing record of learning helps people to remain interested in their own development and allows them to maintain a record of their learning even if they change jobs several times. The Centre says that one of the main advantages of the system is that it can now be accessed everywhere.

The Lifelong Learning Centre were unable to provide costs for the Lifelong Learning System itself, but say that their system is aimed at Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (around 150 are currently participating), who can apply for funding from the government to help with the costs of the training courses offered by the Centre.
