AOL (America Online Inc.) have released their latest software upgrade for its internet service, supporting high-speed data such as digital subscriber lines and non-PC device usage as well as better core features such as e-mail and instant messaging.
AOL 6.0 will also include a built-in multimedia player that will allow members to access music and video online without having to download additional software. This will also include HTML e-mail capability that will include graphics with messages and a synchronised address book that can be accessed regardless of device they are using.
There will also be a shopping assistant that will travel with users and provide ratings for stores and comparison shopping information. The aim of this version is going towards their strategy of AOL Anywhere making AOL available on all devices, not just personal computers. AOL are soon looking at offering AOLTV that will bring television and the internet together through Circuit City stores. Also, AOL are looking at introducing AOL by Phone, a service that uses voice-recognition to allow people to check their e-mail,news and other features over the telephone.
Apparently AOL are preparing for their merger to get the go-ahead with Time Warner Inc. but the deal is still pending US regulatory approval. Currently AOL and Time Warner are working on a subscription-based online must service that they hope to launch next year.
