Over 61,000 lone parents had moved into work by the end of June thanks to the New Deal for Lone Parents, Alistair Darling announced yesterday.
Commenting on the results the Social Security Secretary said:
"NDLP has given thousands of lone parents the opportunity to realise their potential and I am delighted that the figures we are publishingtoday show that this initiative is bearing fruit. Over 3,800 lone parents moved into work in June alone.
"NDLP is opening up opportunities for people who have not been supported in their search for work in the past. The programme - along with other Government initiatives that make work pay - is changing the lives of lone parents and changing the lives of their children."
Margaret Hodge, Employment and Equal Opportunities Minister, added:
"As the school holidays come to an end, it is an ideal time for lone parents to start thinking of the options open to them.
"Lone parents everywhere have everything to gain from visiting a Personal Adviser and finding out about the help and support that is available to them. Personal Advisers aren't just there to tell lone parents about jobs - they are able to give advice on training, childcare, in-work benefits and financial support.
"The fact that almost 90% of lone parents who took the first step and found out about the programme decided to join speaks for itself, " she said.
