Knowledge management and the training professional
--------------------------------------------------
In the lead article in the current issue of Training Magazine, Jack Gordon explores the rapidly growing importance of knowledge management - and suggests that this is a key role which training professionals could grasp and advise upon in the future. However, he also questions whether most training professionals are yet ready to face up to this challenge.

Blair appoints e-envoy
----------------------
In a Speech delivered at Cambridge, University Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced the appointment of an 'e-envoy' to prepare British business for the electronic age. He is Alex Allan, High Commissioner to Australia and former private secretary to John Major. The Prime Minister also used Monday's visit to Cambridge to warn UK businesses that they must adapt to the world of e-commerce and the Internet before they get left behind by other countries. He gave business what he called "a blunt message" saying, "if you don't see the Internet as an opportunity, it will be a threat. In two years time the Internet could be as commonplace in the office as the telephone. If you're not exploiting the opportunities of e-commerce, you could go bankrupt."

Exploring attitudes and perceptions through personal constructs
---------------------------------------------------------------
It's always been difficult to assess and measure changes in attitude, self-confidence, awareness and other non-quantifiable aspects of a person's development. Thirty years ago George Kelly used repertory grid techniques to show how personal constructs could be easily identified. This technique ellicits the individual views and opinions in a graphical way; changes in perception can be demonstrated over time. Now it's possible to use the technique over the web, making it accessable to all evaluators.

The shape of things to come?
----------------------------
Dorseley Kindersley have decided to publish their entire range of publications online and make access and download free. You will be able to print off any of its complete text and illustration books. The cost of paper and ink is likely to be greater than the cost of buying the book itself! This development shows how publishers (and resource writers?) are moving: by putting material on the Internet for free, potential buyers and users and sample your work and then make an informed purchase. That's exactly the idea behind the TrainingZone Toolkit where more and more publishers and trainers and offering stand-along resources from their work, with full credit and copyright given to the original source.
