Editor's Note
=============

With e-learning gaining in popularity day by day, the problem is
increasingly knowing how to wade through the plethora of
computer-based learning products on offer.

This month, Training Journal launched a CDROM and web-based
service which will aim to review most of the e-learning providers
in the marketplace (another site offering a similar service is
Lguide.com).

It's interesting therefore to hear of the work of the Learning
Lab, which, with the support of the likes of Microsoft and ICL,
is channelling resources into uncovering the objective facts
about the effectiveness of e-learning. Professor Steve Molyneux,
director of the Lab, is an enthusiastic communicator of the
benefits of using technologies to complement and enhance existing
forms of learning. However, he is concerned that many of the
providers of e-learning products may not fully understand the way
that the learner interacts with the technology, and that learners
will lose out as a result.

One of the projects currently being undertaken by the Lab is a
long-term study into the effectiveness of Computer-Based
Training. TrainingZONE will be reporting back on the work of the
Learning Lab over the months to come, and looks forward to some
useful in depth research into an area which is in desperate need
of solid supporting facts.

According to the Association for Neuro-Linguistic Programming,
the high court action over the rights to use the term NLP have
resulted in Richard Bandler (who claimed the copyright) being
made bankrupt. Bandler, one of the early founders of the
process, had been taken to court by Tony Clarkson, a certified

Any Answers

Question of the week: Trainer/employee ratios - plea for advice!
----------------------------------------------------------------
In January of this year I was recruited into the role of training
manager for a group of companies. No training department existed
prior to this. We have around 140 employees. The issue: I am a
one-man department, and currently do everything training related,
from all administration to design & delivery. Maybe it's just me,
but my impact seems to be dwindling as I find my time
increasingly taken up by the detail. I am about to press for an
assistant. Is there any published advice on the best, even
minimum, trainer to employee ratios required to be effective? Any
benchmarks? If not, I would be grateful to know your individual
experiences. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Should I
be coping with this number of employees (I can handle the
truth!)?

David Fowler

Other questions posed this week:

- Sarah James would like help with finding programmes aimed at
encouraging older employees approaching retirement to consider
remaining in employment
- Michael Clements is seeking benchmarking examples for Return On
Investment
- Andrea Stenhouse is looking for CBT or other desktop-based
training

Thanks to Denise Robinson, Garry Platt and Richard Hale, who
gave TrainingZONE members the benefit of their knowledge this
week.

Online workshop: managing work balance
--------------------------------------
The issue of work-life balance is one which is steadily gaining
prominence. Both the media and government are keen to promote
the idea that flexible working is becoming the new way to work,
but the reality has yet to bear this out. Surveys repeatedly show
that workers in the UK regularly put in more hours than their
counterparts in mainland Europe. Can the general trend towards
more flexible working vaunted by the media and government
actually be reality for the majority of the UK workforce? If
legislation isn't going to make a significant difference, then
what is? If you have been responsible for or have experienced
flexible working in your workplace, or have found yourself
spending longer and longer hours at your desk, come along and
share your experiences.

All our online workshops are free to join. Just visit
