From the Editor
===============

We shall shortly be adding several new features to TrainingZone. One will be a Reviews area providing peer-based reviews of training hardware, learning software, published books, manuals and periodicals. We already have several Guest Editors and Topic Experts who may help to provide reviews, but we'd like to hear from new members interested in laying their hands on the latest materials and preparing a short review for publication. Please send a short description of your background and interests to the Editor.

If you produce or market products and publications for the training, learning and staff development sectors, please do send me details and I'll send you details of the address for sending materials for review.

Just a reminder that next week we shall be running a special issue about the Training Solutions and IT Training Show in Birmingham. If you are exhibiting or presenting, please send me details and a web address for inclusion in the issue.

We have 100 complimentary tickets for the exhibition on 6-8 July to give away. Please email me if you would like one.

Internet Monitor
================

There is pressure on space this week, so this is just a small
selection of Internet sites and postings from the past week.

Training Professionals Gateway
------------------------------
I recently came across this excellent homepages website runb by Mike Collins in Cork, Ireland. We obviously think along similar lines. He has published a wealth of information on the site, mainly by identifying and providing links to a large library of other resource material of interest to training professionals acros the web. It's well worth a good browse around; I shall be returning for a more detailed hunt through all this material shortly.

Bridging the gap between formal and informal learning
-----------------------------------------------------
This is another excellent online conference initiated some time ago on the Virtual University Press website, and co-ordinated by staff from the University of Ulster. All the initial papers for discussion are posted to the site, and there is a great opportunity to participate in the debate by using electronic conferencing facilities provided free on the site.

Lifelong Learning - monthly newsletter from VUP
----------------------------------------------
Virtual University Press also publish a monthly email newsletter in support of their journals - Continuous Professional Development, and Virtual University Journal. TrainingZone is establishing reciprocal links with these sites and will bring you all the relevant postings. Meanwhile, we've agreed to make the newsletter with all its hyperlinks to feature articles available on the site and the May issue can be found at
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4300&d=1

Access Programmes
-----------------
In support of more informal learning, and widening access to further education for adult learners from non-traditional backgrounds, the Access Programme website provides full details of more than 1000 courses - of interest to access co-ordinators and students alike.

Applying action learning for results
------------------------------------
The concluding part of a detailed article about research into action learning methods conducted by Derek Smith which provides a useful critique of action learning approaches.

Sexual harassment prevention training
-------------------------------------
Currently on offer from the excellent ASTD website
http://www.astd.org/virtual_community
is a multimedia presentation, case study and support materials to develop a full programme on sexual harassment prevention. Well worth a look if this is your field. The hyperlink for the resource itself takes you to
http://209.157.101.215/ASTD/roi/index.html

Games for use in training
-------------------------
Here's a library of training games on the Thiagi website, each available for free and complete with all instructions. Great!
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4264&d=1

Results through Training
------------------------
A selection of comprehensive Trainer Kits with all materials, notes, support materials, etc covering quite a wide range of topics are available for purchase from the US-based website. I've not tried them, but they look good. I'd welcome feedback on how well they work from anyone who's used them: why not post your comment at the end of the article for others to see?

Does your coaching and mentoring reflect the New World of Work
--------------------------------------------------------------
This detailed article by Jim Laughlin on the Linkage Inc website came to my notice just too late for inclusion in last week's special issue on Coaching methods. It explores how the workplace is changing in nature and the implications for coaching approaches in contributing to staff development.

Latest News Stories

University for Industry news
----------------------------
http://www.ufiltd.co.uk

A month or two ago, the new UfI published an invitation to external organisations to establish Learning Hub Centres around the country as part of the UfI. We reported details of this at
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4081&d=1
The UfI website now includes a helpful Question and Answers page responding to some of the more frequently asked questions about these learning centres, which interested parties would be advised to check before submitting proposals:
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4262&d=1
There is also a new supplementary page of information for potential partners in Wales or those seeking to provide services within Wales and this is linked from
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4261&d=1
There is also a series of Partner Roadshows being organised around the country through June to explain the proposals in more detail with any interested organisation:
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=4337&d=1
The UfI Board met for the first time on 24 May and was completed with the appointment by the Secretary of State of three final members drawn mainly from industrial backgrounds.

National Training Organisations and the 'skills revolution'
-----------------------------------------------------------
In a speech to the National Training Organisations (NTO) National Council, David Blunkett recently set out his vision of the central role which NTOs were expected to play in the present and future skills revolution.

IPD news
--------
A couple of recent postings from the Institute of Personnel and Development website. There is now an online Press Direct service with a daily digest of press coverage on all HR issues. The IPD has made service is IPD member access restricted

Further to the story in last week's issue about the Institute seeking a Royal Charter, there is now a questions and answers page on the subject, with an online feedback facility. This time, anyone can comment.

Government backs down over internet regulation
----------------------------------------------
The Government has backed away from restrictive plans to regulate
ecommerce. Opponents feared that the government's desire to be able
to eavesdrop on secure transactions on the internet would be
disastrous for the sector. Consultation has been going on over the
electronic commerce bill and the controversial element centred on
encryption. The government wanted to have the key to all encrypted
data (the "key escrow" provision) but this was widely regarded as
unworkable. In addition it raised concerns about both civil
liberties and free trade.

BT launches "free" week-end internet access
-------------------------------------------
BT have finally given into the pressure from their rival ISPs by
offering call-free internet access over week-ends using an 0800
number. This will only be available to subscribers of BT's Plan
Unlimited service which costs 11.75 pounds a month so it is slightly misleading to call this "free" internet access. Weekday use will still carry the same charges as before (4p per minute peak rate and 1.5p per minute evenings).

It is interesting that, having recently refused to confirm that it
had any such plans, BT has finally launched the new service the very week-end of the European Telecommunications Boycott. As we reported recently, this campaign is being coordinated in the UK by the Campaign for Unmetered Telecommunications whose aims are clearly not likely to find favour at BT.
