Consultants at training specialist Xebec McGraw-Hill have developed an interactive competency-matching matrix for HR professionals, which is now freely available online at: www.xebec-online.com.
The matrix lists 109 individual competencies, under six broad headings: Contributing to business success; Problem solving & decision making; Managing & analysing information; Managing people; Communicating effectively and Maximising your own potential.
For each competency, the matrix recommends specific modules from Xebec McGraw-Hill’s CD-Rom courses as well as stand- alone courses from the company’s online portfolio. Hyperlinks provide more details on the recommended material, including a course overview, target audience and duration. The site also includes a separate matrix which indicates the extent to which certain courses meet selected competencies developed by the Management Charter Initiative.
“More and more organisations are developing competencies to enhance individual and organisational performance,” said Tim Drewitt, senior consultant at Xebec McGraw-Hill. “Our new online matrix helps you select appropriate interactive training by matching detailed competencies to particular modules or courses. Through multimedia, people can gain the skills they need when and where they want them without waiting for external courses to be scheduled.”
The six main competency areas in the generic matrix are broken down into 21 sub-headings. Users select the general area they are interested in and the sub-headings take them directly to the specific competencies. The six main sections can also be downloaded as separate PDF files to allow users to work with the competencies offline or to incorporate them into other documents.
“The online matrix is a comprehensive planning resource that enables trainers and individuals to create their own interactive learning courses based around their organisation's core competencies,” said Tim Drewitt. “It can be used by any organisation as a starting point for competency-matching and it gives a fresh perspective on what can be achieved using short bite-sized chunks of learning.”
Xebec McGraw-Hill also offers a free service for organisations looking for tailored competency-matching. Trainers or line managers simply provide details of their organisation’s competencies or the standards that people are expected to work to. Xebec McGraw-Hill’s consultants then recommend specific sections or modules from their portfolio which will deliver the required skills - either in interactive CD-Rom format or, if the organisation has the facility to train over its intranet, in online courseware. Organisations as diverse as Alliance & Leicester, Britvic Soft Drinks, Egg and the London Borough of Southwark have already taken advantage of this free service.
Alternatively, as a chargeable project, Xebec McGraw-Hill’s consultants can design a custom training directory, which matches all of a client’s training resources to its own set of competencies.
