Editor's Note
=============
It's been a very busy week for news, so several of the stories in LearningWire are shorter than usual to allow us to include more references. We can't summarise all the week's news, so it's always worth keeping an eye on the main site every couple of days; to make it easy, all the new postings are shown on the home page.

Could you chair an online workshop? As our new online workshop area starts to take off, we're looking for professionals interested in chairing an online discussion likely to last up to an hour. We plan to establish regular online workshops on each of several general topics e.g.
Training practitioner's forum
Training manager's forum
HR professional's forum
As well as specific topic-based workshops such as
Evaluating training and learning
Computer-based training
Learning Organisations
Personnel issues
The role of the trainer
and others.
The role of the chair is just to keep the online discussion going. No technology is required, other than a web browser and Internet access. Each workshop takes place at a predetermined time at
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/chat
and any number of people can participate free. Please email the editor if you would like to help run a workshop.

Launch of LearningBuzz and BehaviourBuzz
----------------------------------------
These two new websites launched at the beginning of September and are definitely worth keeping an eye on. Each site offers a selection of thought-provoking and practical articles by respected figures in the two broad areas of Learning and Behaviour respectively. Amongst the contributors are Peter Honey, Bill Lucas and Andrew Gibbons. Each site categories the articles in a series of topic areas to enable users to find and read related articles. Amongst the articles which took my attention in the initial launch were: 'What do you learn from experience?', 'The power of learning', 'Four problems with development', 'Do we really value our employees?' and 'How to put a good presentation together fast'.

Both sites promise to add new articles on a monthly basis.

Measuring the 'hard stuff'
--------------------------
Twenty years experience measuring the "hard stuff" have yielded best practices which can save time and improve the quality of performance measures for teams and other hard-to-measure work. This article by Jack Zigon on the Linkage Inc website describes a process for creating performance measures for any kind of work and the learning resulting from implementing these systems.

Knowledge management and organisational learning
------------------------------------------------
The second annual conference on this subject is scheduled for London on 28 February to 2 March. By participating in an online survey on the subject you can earn a discount on the conference booking fee and other goodies.

Three roads to cost effectiveness
---------------------------------
Clive Shepherd of Fastrak Consulting has added another interesting article to his website aimed at training managers wanting to develop greater cost effectiveness in the programmes which they create and manage. For those with responsibility for ensuring best value in training policies and practice, it's worth a read.

The Current and Future State of Distance Learning
-------------------------------------------------
The Linkage Inc website recently surveyed 192 organizations to analyze the current and future state of distance learning. The study covered such topics as delivery methods, types of programs, allocated budgets, employee interests and many more. The results are now available online. https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=6396&d=1

Creating a learning organisation is simple but not easy
-------------------------------------------------------
Another well-written article from Peter Honey just published on the new LearningBuzz website. The message is simple, but, as so often, putting it into practice is a great deal harder.

18 million pounds for new Internet-based job matching service

70% of employers now aware of ageism code
-----------------------------------------
Following the production of a new voluntary code of practice on ageism practice in recruitment and selection, a government survey now shows that 70% of employers are aware of what they should be doing. Of course, methinks that actual practice often differs from professed intent and that an aweful lot of people still feel they are discriminated against out there. Does it seem any different to you?
