Internal Managrment Trainee Scheme

default-16x9

Our CEO would like to set up a management trainee scheme for local graduates to be advertised by the end of this month. Having never run a scheme like this before I am looking for practical advise and a warning of main pitfalls to try to ensure the scheme is a valluable and well run one. Can anyone help?

  1. The MT programme
    Hi Sarah,

I work for The Admiral Group and have been running a graduate management trainee programme for 3 years. Mail me and I’ll be happy to share my experiences with you. The good and not so good.

  3. Ask some key questions
    Hi Sarah

You have an interesting challenge here, especially considering the short timescale.

Here are some questions that you may wish to consider. (Should you need any further guidance, my contact details are in the Who’s Who – Members Directory – Profile part of this website.)

You need to decide what you want these graduates to do, both during and after their training. (Think about their existing skills and how best you can use them.)

Consider what resources you have available (time, people, money etc). Think about your own time and how much effort you can put into this project. Can you produce the solutions yourself or do you need to get help from elsewhere?

Determine how much support your organisation (and its employees) are prepared to give to support these graduates.

Decide what you want the graduates to learn and what materials are available to help them with their learning. Can any other materials be developed to help them?

Think about how the graduates will be supported during the learning process and how their performance will be monitored/reviewed. You will need to address their individual expectations. Make sure you influence what they’re told during the recruitment process.

    Good luck.

  4. Management trainee scheme
    Hi Sarah,
In my experience graduate schemes involve getting together for a day or so a month and the benefit in the workplace can be quite small. So i would suggest you put a lot of effort into design and work to maximise learning transfer.
Core skills for new graduates include the following:
leadership, change mgmt, coaching, team development, effective meetings, interviewing, communications, benchmarking, problem solving, quality, creativity, budgets, motivation, appraisal, delegation, process improvement, presentations, impact, risk assessment, time management, well-being, negotiation, measurement, incident mgmt.
This is a lot to learn and I find bite-size chunks where several skills are learned in a session is a good way to stimulate garduates.
    Hope this helps,
    Will
