Time Management Materials?

default-16x9

Hi there

I have been asked to run an internal course on Time Management later this year, to include the following areas:

- Delegation
- Prioritisation
- Using e-mail tools to help manage your time.

It's not a subject I've delivered on before, and I will obviously research it myself, but I just wondered if anyone has any resources/activities or materials they would be prepared to share.

Thanks
Helen Wyatt

    1. The title “Time Management” is a misnomer; you cannot manage Time (unless you come from Galifrey)
    2. In my experience “delegation” and “prioritisation” aren’t THAT helpful to the MAJORITY of delegates…rather than go for these generic tools may I suggest you do some simple needs assessment; (sorry, I’m being presumptious) get the Time Bandits list from http://www.coach-and-courses.com, “downloadable resources” and send it to all the delegates who will be on the course. Get them to tick the boxes and send it back to you. This will give you the option to cover the areas they need. This has certainly helped me in the past.

    I hope this helps

  4. Is it really about time management…?
    Hi Helen,

I notice from the short list of topics to cover, and the fact you’ve got 1 day to do this all in, that there may be other issues at work here…

Assuming you’ve been asked to run this by a manager or 2, and that they’ve guided the choice of topics, I wonder if what is really going on for them is that people aren’t doing what these managers wanted/expected them to do, or are doing them in ‘the wrong order’. And using email tools to manage time suggests to me that at the very least there are some communication issues here too.

Delegation is the art and science of having somebody else undertake certain tasks on your behalf. The fact that the person delegated to doesn’t do things ‘as expected’ says more about the ability to delegate effectively than the ability for the other person to manage their time, I suspect.

Allow me to suggest 2 books or concepts to look at.

The first is “Get Things Done” by Dave Allen. He takes a very different approach to time management. I used to run time management courses ‘in the old days’ when people did them to get a free filofax. The traditional methods of time management don’t work for everybody, in fact I’d say they don’t work for most people. And I’m one of them! I’ve found GTD to be a breakthrough – so get the book second hand from Amazon and have a gander – it’ll give you plenty on getting things done – a better phrase i think than ‘time management’.

The second book/concept I’d point you at is Simplicity and the whole simpler work movement of Bill Jensen. There’s lots in this about communication, making sure people have decent answers to just a couple of key questions that means they can figure stuff out for themselves and are more likely to do the right things and in the right order of priority. Check out http://www.simplerwork.com and sign up to download the free study they did – it’s 146 pages of easy to read research packed with some real gems. Oh, and check out the “Simplicity Survival Handbook” – also from Amazon.

    Cheers

    Martin
