How to help a staff member improve oral skills

default-16x9

One of my team members has a very unstructured way of explaining issues and dealing with client questions. I was thinking that there should be some sort or course that I could send her on?

  1. I would be cautious about sending her on a course
    Hi Samantha

Although a number of course topics come to mind, including communication skills, customer care/service, presentation skills, even some elements of a ‘train the trainer’ course, they would all include some topics that are not necessarily relevant for your member of staff. I wonder if this is an ideal opportunity for some one to one coaching, either with you as her manager, or with a colleague who has the necessary skills. Or you could “buy-in” a few sessions of coaching for her. This would mean that the development is tailored to exactly what she needs.

It is important to remember, though, that she must see the need for the development and actively want to improve her skills. That’s why I feel caution is always needed when thinking of “sending” someone on a course.

I do quite a bit of work in this area and would be happy to help further – please email me off line.

    With very best wishes.
