can anybody recommend a practical and straighforward e-learning authoring tool? I am looking to develop the use of e-learning in my business but do not want to buy generic e-learning content or go to the expense of using a bespoke e-learning provider. We have the technical expertise in house to link with out systems but need a simple, straighforward but powerful authoring tool so myself and my trainers can develop our own e-learning content. Do you have a product that you have used and can recommend?

Look for Elicitus for more e-Learning and less authoring

We currently use 2 excellent and easy to use authoring tools for developing E-Learning solutions in the finance sector . IMPETUS for developing I.T. Training solutions, such as Word & Excel etc, and also SEMINAR for all other courses, including soft skills training, induction etc. Try http://www.electrovision.com to trial both.

e-learning isn’t easy

The sad truth is that creating GOOD elearning costs money. Just because you have the tools to create elearning doesn’t mean that the end results will be any good. I could buy top quality art materials but that wouldn’t make me an artist! I’ve been working in CBT and elearning since 1989 and it saddens me that, even after all this time, such a huge proportion of elearning is of extremely poor quality and therefore very ineffective.
As for authoring tools, my suggestion is to avoid like the plague any tool that converts from Powerpoint or Word. That’s the equivalent of saying that you can create a movie by converting your photo album.
If you want to create CBT then Macromedia’s Captivate is, in my view, head and shoulders above the others.
For general elearning, then I would recommend one of digital workshop’s products (www.digitalworkshop.com).
From the point of view of properly designing elearning, I recommend the book “Individual Preferences in E-Learning” available from Amazon and written by Howard Hills who knows more about this subject than anyone.
