HR strategy – keeping in touch

I am doing some work on HR strategy, and how senior HR staff keep themselves updated. I'm thinking of such things as demographic changes, changes in assumptions, legislation, new and emerging skillsets - anything that will or could affect the HR strategy of an organisation.

In the same way, how do you/they keep a finger on the pulse internally so as to pick up shifts iinside the organisation that will affect the HR startegy?
