Whats a training course worth?

default-16x9

Ive been asked to write a 10 day programme that will raise the skills base of staff, build their self confidence and it will include criteria for selection and an assessment process. Each unit/module will take 5 hrs to deliver and I will be being paid £3500 plus expenses for each time it is run. While I have no idea exactly how much income this wil generate for the company, there will be an increase of £50 per day for every person who gains work from having attended and each course will be attended by 15 people. I retain intellectual property and they will own the materials. Ive previously written 6hrs of training for them and was paid £1000. This was more general staff development and was not commisioned with income generation in mind.
I have no baseline to work from and would appreciate any data that will help me with a figure I can take to them for negotiation - they've asked me to say how much I would charge and chose me on the basis of my previous work and the fact that I have a great deal of experience in the areas the course will cover.

  1. What’s the investment?
Your question raises the link between investment of time in programme design and a realistic tangible return in terms of the value for the finished work.

In my experience as a purchaser of their services, realistic self-employed associates are currently charging £350 – £450 per day (there are some who charge more than double this, of course). So far, so good. The difficult bit is deciding how much time you should invest in the programme design. From your comments, I’m inferring that the programme will be delivered in-house. In that case, it may be worth comparing the “market price” per delegate of a similar programme from one of the major providers of off-the-shelf training, then deduct the saving in facilitator and venue costs. Over-simplification perhaps, but hope this helps.
