With the vast number of NLP training organisations 'out there' it is often very difficult to know who to turn to when your personal development points you in this direction! With no government 'body' for organising or accrediting this it further muddies the water, and don't even try doing a 'google' search!
I would be grateful therefore for any feedback / advice regarding this training for providers in the South-west, including those who offer this accreditation by distance or open learning.
Also any viewpoints on the benefits of NLP Practitioner training would be welcome (am I making the right decision on spending my money on this!?). I am a freelance training consultant.

Just DO IT!
I did my NLP Practitioner training wth the NLP Academy, Bromley in 1998 and have only ever ‘looked back’ to see the miraculously positive changes I have been able to make in my own life and in helping others, both in 1:1 sessions and groups. My course is accredited through ABNLP (American Board) – not that it means very much over here!

You might try John Seymour, who is well-known in NLP circles, and is Based in Bristol, or, if there is a group of you, I would strongly recommend Sue Knight (www.sueknight.co.uk) as she would come to Taunton or wherever. She may also be able to advise on distance learning options.

Is NLP the right direction for you? As an NLP Trainer I would say yes, as someone who has experienced NLP from the other side of the loop I can only say yes too.
Damian as a freelance training consultant you can find many benefits from learning NLP. If you haven’t already, I recommend these three books for a good overview of the types of things you can expect to learn and develop.

Some questions to ask…
Contrary to your statement, there are one or two ‘governing bodies’ who accredit NLP. Perhaps the most widespread is the International NLP Trainers Association (INLPTA). They have very high standards – see their website http://www.inlpta.com . You might also try http://www.anlp.org, a UK based Association for those interested in NLP.
As we do not operate in the South West (unless you have enough people – say 6 – to make it worth our while to drive down to your glorious part of the world), I thought you might value some questions to ask your potential providers:
1) Are your Trainers INLPTA accredited?
2) If not, what do you offer by way of external accreditation of your courses?
3) Do your fees include for any end-of-course certification?
4) What steps do you take to encourage course participants to apply their learning to self and others?
5) How many participants will there be on your programme?
6) What is the Trainer/Participant ratio?
7) If I want to re-take a portion of the course, or even just refresh myself, what (if anything) would you charge for this – you could offer your services as an Assistant, in wihch case you might expect it to be free”
8) How do I know your course outcomes are portable in the event that I want to go further with other providers? (INLPTA accredited courses all are)
9) Will I learn how to use the various techniques etc or will I just have them ‘done to me’ – you might be surprised how many people we get from other trainers who have never used the material!
10) Can I have a ‘satisfaction or your money back’ guarantee? (we do!)
Finally, PLEASE do not go for an distance learning approach – that would be like trying to learn to drive a car over the telephone. Good NLP training offers personal, active, on the spot support while you learn the material before letting you out to try it for yourself.
