Our organisation is undergoing a great period of change which will result in our current 'desktop' system being replaced by a web-based one. As training co-ordinator I have been charged to develop a computer skills matrix to help assess the present level of computer literacy amongst staff and then to devise a training strategy to bring staff up to the required operational level. I am hoping to do this on-line but am not sure whether those staff who are not very computer literate will be able to cope with this. Any thoughts or ideas?
Has anyone else produced a computer skills matrix (or similar) that they would be willing to share with me?
I would be most grateful for any advice.

You may find it useful to have a look at http://www.e-skills.com/e-skillspassport/
It may not be exactly what you are after but if it is it may save you some work.

European Computer Driving Licence
Hi Sue,
The ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)certification offered by the BCS could help. It offers a good all round set of foundation level competencies that can be assessed online.
PC skills checklist
Hi Sue,
I have a PC skills checklist which I send out before doing PC coaching – happy to send (its just a 1 pager, not as comprehensive as ECDL !)

Simple IT Skills Matrix
Hi Sue,
I have a computer skills matrix that I can send you. We use it as part of a Training Needs Analysis for clients but it can be adopted to suit your requirements.
It’s a simplistic approach to the IT skills needs for a business, what skills are needed, who already has the skills and who will need training to acquire the necessary skills.
If you were to combine it with the advice and guidance of the other respondents, then you would have a toolset to draw on in addressing the problem.
Regards,
Tony Treacy.
Staff can cope

We (InfoBasis) helped develop the IT User Skills Framework with e-skills UK, and used a web-interface to do so. We found that (if designed properly) people could deal with what is a self-explanatory skills matrix, even if they had very little knowledge of computers.
At InfoBasis we have a great deal of experience of designing and implementing skills frameworks – either for their own sake, or in order to produce training plans and for detailed skills management. If you want to mail me or call (0870 2000 350) I’d be happy to discuss your project and the options you might take, and rest assured I won’t try to sell you anything!
