I have just started a new job working for the Police as a computer trainer. I have worked in FE for the past 10 years and do not have a Police background.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make "dry" subjects like the Data Protection Act, the legal process of convictions, etc interesting and fun?
Also, is there anywhere on the Internet or other place where I might find stories of a Police nature which I could use in my lessons?
Any ideas would be very welcome.

Legal fun
Are you training computer skills to the force or legal skills through on line training? I ask as most police officers will have covered the basics of the law at an advanced level by the time they are 12 months time served.
Many officers have a keen interest in the criminal law and will follow sentencing guidelines and conviction tariff trends as part of their ongoing professional development. If you want information on Data protection we can send some resources to you.
For other areas we suggest using the case law pertinent to the area of study as they will yield more interesting and funnier stories than fiction.
We use games to test knowledge in certain areas and these have always raised a laugh as the student has to play the role of the accused, officer or advisor.
We wish you the best of luck a number of our trainers are ex police officers who have retired from the force/military and gone on to practice law or teach in their specialist subject areas. They are a great bunch of people to work with but maybe we are biased now!

Try a Quiz
I do a session on employment law on my Recruitment & Selection Courses and i use a quiz. I have the questions printed on laminated card with multiple choice answers. I divide the participants into 3 groups and give each group the same questions and 30 minutes to discuss and come up with their answers. The element of competition between the groups always makes for a lively session and we get lots of additional info out of the debrief.
Have you considered e-learning?
I work for an e-learning consultancy and we have produced material for CPS and NCIS that was engaging and still got the important facts across. I would be happy to show you what we have done and discuss how we might help in developing something that would last and work for you.
On-line learning
There are a number of online and computer based training packages many are used by forces throughout the UK. Contact me if you want any further information contact me at sarah@rands.me.uk
