Using an HR Development Intranet Site

default-16x9

Nearly a year ago we launched an Development intranet site in our organisation. It's purpose is to provide a process for people to use in planning and managing their development, and to provide information on the resources we can provide for development within the organisation. We want to look at ways of encouraging people to use it - and would be intetested in hearing from anyone with a similar site on what they've done to achieve this.

  1. Try these ideas
Janet I created a similar resource myself last year, using basic web page building skills and readership has been gradually growing over the last year. I think you simply have to keep reinforcing it as the initial information point for enquirers. If it is well designed it should tell staff what they need to know very quickly and also broaden their understanding of what a training function can do these days.
You can’t make people look at the Intranet any more than they need to – so view the problem from this standpoint.
It also depends on the rest of the Company Intranet. How good is it? How much do line managers reinforce it as a main communication medium. Also, think about advertising the site on paper based mediums eg any newsletters or noticeboards and mention it in team briefings. Stick at it – the whole world is gradually changing towards electronic info systems but it’ll take a long time!

  2. You need a lure
    Hi Janet,

My experience of this comes from the other direction – using intranets. There needs to be something that will grab their interest and draw them in – it can be development oriented or social in context but it needs to grab their attention. Then place the interim link in a page with others to the areas you want them to go to (making them just as interesting – if not more so).

This should get them into the site and helps them to have a subtle interaction with the information you want to get to them.

    Good luck, hope this helps.

  3. Intranet Site
A couple of years ago, I was working for an organisation that had a great intranet.

It was: easy to use, easy to read, had a great search engine, had fast access to local websites and the drawcard was the internal employee directory.

Each of the 800 employee was responsible for updating their own location, phone, fax, job title details etc. There was no excuse that you could not contact anyone.
