Local Government Competences

default-16x9

I work for a City Council who are looking to put in place a competency framework for our management population.

What I would like to do is talk to any other authorities who have already done this. In particular I am interested in talking to anyone who has evaluated the effectiveness and validity of their framework, and who can discuss the measurable improvements that it has brought them.

If anyone knows of an authority who has done this I would be grateful for any information.

  1. LG competencies
Responses to Nigel’s request would also be of interest to myself, especially so if an authority’s internal competency framework has been mapped to externally accredited/certificated learning/training.

I have an occupational background in LG and now work as an External Assessor/Verifier with ILM

  2. contact for you
    Hi Nigel

I don’t know what region you are from but I would suggest you contact Welna Bowden, who is the Regional Skills and Capacity Advisor (North West) Improvement and Development Agency
    Tel: 07766251639.

Welna was very closely involved in the competency framework development and skills auditing work conducted at Blackpool, Halton, Wirral and Macclesfield CC.

A case study about this work is available at: http://www.infobasis.com/pdfs/customer/LocalGovernmentCaseStudy.pdf

Hope this helps – any questions call me on 07971 612 437

“You’re absolutely right to take time now to think exactly what you want to achieve through the framework and how your Council wants to measure effectiveness. If you don’t you can end up with a complicated framework trying to address too many things and probably satisfying none. We would be happy to talk about our experiences in this and give you some practical advice.”
