Confidence Building Workshop
Shirley
Firstly, I think it is quite ambitious to think about developing confidence in 90 mins. I am drawn between two extremes: i) what needs analysis and business benefit is diving this, and how did you arrive at a 90 min workshop as the best intervention to acheive this; and ii) it is great to see something, however short, focused on giving something back to people, especially around an issue where, if you can help, can make such a big difference.
Anyway, some ideas.
1. Positive affirmation – get people to speak out about their strengths, successes or things they are proud about. If the group is very underconfident, then maybe give them a few moments to write something down and then do a swap so that they read out about another person.
2. Acting into a confident state – get the group to mill around just noddy to one another or smilling or saying hello. Now get them to strighten their backs, get their head up, chest out, big smile, etc. and walk around acting like a very confident (but not arrogant) person. Ask them to make strong eye contact, to say ‘hello’ with great confidence and strength, and to walk calmly but purposefully. Some will get this but others might find it hard. The theory is to change your physical state first and then maybe your attitude will follow, or at least, it will be easier to change your attitude in that state. If your behaviour is very unassertive and underconfident, it is especially hard to cahnge how you feel.
3. Get them to draw what confidence looks like and talk it through with a colleague before drawing out some main themes in the group.
Best of luck
Graham
