I am looking to evaluate how much we are spending on training as a percentage of payroll and would like to compare this with other organisations.
If you have this information that you can share with me, or know where I may find some official figures please contact me on denise.halton@aat.org.uk

Training Costs
You have probaly already seen this but the answer was posted on the any answers section on 11th June. Here is precis :http://www.dfes.gov.uk/statistics/DB/ SFR/s0316/index.html And Across the UK, spending on T & D dropped to 1.5% of salary last year, from £474 per person to £305 per person.
. Best practice organisations spend almost 3% of salary on training and developing their employees, twice as much as the UK average.”
CIPD Survey
I couldn’t find any monetary figures in the suggested survey, but remembered this year’s CIPD Training and Development Survey (April 2002).
This suggests that, on average, £361 per person is spent on training each year, of which about £180 relates to classroom training. These figures exclude the costs of on-the-job training which they suggest is by far the most popular method of training which often gets overlooked when it comes to estimating the cost of training.
Training Spend
Hi Denise,
I too am researching into what proportion of salary or revenue is spent on training but my focus is on IT training spend rather than general training and I am contrasting trends in the UK against other European countries. I would be grateful to anyone willing to share information with me on this.
