Learning Resource Centre strategy

default-16x9

Currently in place are 2 learning resource centres at different manufacturing sites which are run by different suppliers. Both centres offer learndirect but one of the centre offers classroom based training aswell. In terms of best practice should staff be able to register for just business use with authorisation from their manager, or should we also continue to encourage learning for personal use. It is not currently intended that the organisation will aim to provide tailored on-line courses however some tailored multimedia products are in place.
Has anyone come across some good reading materials on learning resource centre strategies?
I need to implement a vision and strategy to give guidance to the busines as well as the LRCs.

  1. Business Alignment
Over the last few years, with the “stampede” to online learning, I’m afraid not a lot of new material has been written about learning resource centres. Coupled with the fact that LRCs never really took off in the States (where lots of training books seem to be written), there isn’t much out there, especially at the intermediate to advanced level.

I spent four years supporting the LRC network for one of the main UK banks and since then I’ve worked with customers on their own LRC strategies.

You don’t mention how well the centres are being used, but my own experience has shown that ensuring the LRC is aligned to the needs of the business has proven the best long term strategy. Business drivers are the key motivators behind LRC usage.

There’s always been a debate about whether “personal use” learning has a place. Over the last ten years, I’ve seen that, whereas “personal use” usage may have promoted the LRC in the first instance, it’s been business-related use that’s sustained the Centre.
