About a month ago I left my job as a medical sales representative for a job in another sales role. I was a rep for four years and a teacher prior to that. I am not a happy camper in my new job and need to do something about that - urgently!
I would like to work as a trainer. How, exactly, should I go about doing this? Is it best to try to try to find work with a training company first? If so, what's the best way of doing that? Should I persist with the recruitment company who are trying to find something for me? I'm unsure about this due to the fact they found me my current job.( I know you're not supposed to believe these people).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I now have quite a few financial commitments that won't be met by working part-time in a bar!
Thanks
Sophie

From sales to training

I think a good start would be to decide what skills and experience you have in two areas. Firstly, what content could you train (eg sales skills). List out your qualifications, experience and credentials in that area. Secondly, training skills. List out what qualifications, experience and credentials you have to be a trainer (which may be based on your experience in teaching).
Now look at the job adds in People Management, Personnel Today, etc. and check that you meet the type of criteria employers are looking for. If you have very specialised experience in your subject specialism you may find an employer who will put less emphasis on your training inexperience and more on your specialist expertise. The recruitment company should be able to advise on this, especially in they are training/HR market.
Without real experience or qualifications in training I doubt if you will be able to step straight into a training job, certainly not with a training provider. You might find a path into training once you are working with an employer (eg from sales into sales training) without being qualified. Or you could look to get qualified now, and you might get lucky with a company, impressed by your initiative, willing to take you on before you complete.
Best of luck

It may help to become a member of a professional Training body – ITOL for example. You could probably do this using your teaching qualifications. Link attached…good luck!
