I took a scenario based approach. After a brief introduction (10 minutes) to the topic, I then split the delegates into groups with work books filled with scenarios that they would complete. After 3 – 4 scenarios, we would discuss around it and expand on what I told them in the introduction. Beats droning through a powerpoint presentation for a few hours!

Keep it real
The key to any type of ‘dry’ training like this is to keep it real.
Although I agree with Rich about the scenarios I feel that 3 or 4 would be too many at one time. Perhaps a ‘day in the life of …’ scenario where each learner had a number of compliance issues to deal with in their job would be a good idea.
This type of training needs to have as much variety and richness as possible. Try accelerated learning and multiiple intelligence techniques for a deep learning experience.
We deliver all of our training, including compliance topics such as Data Protection and Caldicott in the NHS (which is as dry as it gets!) in this way and I would be happy to talk to you about ideas for your particular topics if you want to email me.

Compliance Training
I find that designing the training material with a greater bias towards consumer education works best. We started the training session with the question “How does this piece of legislation affect you”, and progressively went on to the company’s compliance measures. I also focussed on the penalties of non-compliance as a way to enforce awareness.
