Got any assessment centre exercises for recruiting a Training Manager?

default-16x9

My company is currently recruiting a Training and Development Manager and the second stage of the recruitment will be an assessment centre.

I am looking for some ideas for skill focused exercises that will really help us identify which of the candidates have the qualities and skills we are looking for.

I look forward to hearing your ideas.

  1. What are the skills needed?
    Hi Emily

Could you provide more detail on what skills/qualities you’re looking for? Sadly a job title doesn’t mean that the person will be doing the same thing as another person with the same title. Will they be working round the whole training cycle or managing the team who do, for instance?

With the answer to the earlier question Mercuri Urval can tailor an assessment centre to the context. If you need more information please let me know.

  3. Get applicants to prepare and deliver a presentation
One good way to assess the skills of training personnel is to get them to deliver a short presentation on a topic related to the job being applied for. You can ask them to include any points (attitudes, skills, knowledge) that you want to know about. When I was interviewed for my present job (as an S/NVQ Co-ordinator), I was asked to give a 10-minute presentation about how I would approach the job, given the organisational setting, as well as my perceptions about the challenges involved and how I might deal with them. In this way, the interviewing panel was able to assess my presentation skills; and to gauge whether or not my approach would be appropriate and realistic for the particular organisational setting. As an interviewee, I had an idea about what they wanted to know, as well as an opportunity to prepare appropriately, and to demonstrate both my skills and my awareness about the job I was applying for.

  4. Assessment Centre
    Emily,
Difficult to comment without knowing the exact job remit, however, would suggest a presentation on a key skill area i.e. “My one-year training plan for Company X”. I would also suggest asking them to run a training session on a topic and make sure some of your assessors are given certain roles to play throughout. Obviously, a one-to-one or panel interview may also be required to iron out any last-minute concerns or probe around man-management issues e.t.c.
    Good luck!

  5. In response to Alison
    Hi Alison,
The role will involve the strategic management of training within the organisation. They will be responsible for establishing a learning culture and managing one member of staff – me! We are looking for someone with exceptional skills in developing people, motivating people and experience in all areas of the training cycle. Their job will be very hands on initially as I will be leaving to have a baby shortly after they are recruited, but will be returning to do some hands on delivery later in the year.

    I hope this helps!

    Emily.

  6. Assessment centre exercises
    Hi Emily,

There is insufficient space here to address all aspects of assessment exercises, but if you would like to drop me a mail, I would be happy to assist.
