SME Training Research

default-16x9

I'm after the core stuff, the basic arguments as to why they should embrace trainig, the positive effects, cost as weighed against profits, and so on...

I've tried Marchmont and the University of Bournemouth to no avail.

    Hi Chris,
I hope that this isn’t too obvious an answer but have you tried your local Business Link or Enterprise Agency. I know that their focus has shifted to significantly focus on the SME sector, so they should have some information on why, shouldn’t they.

    Cheers,

    Thanx Megan

Its the basics that I’m finding hard to locate.

There is plethora of research at higher in-depth levels. But, as seems always, there is a lack of published evidence to support the core arguments.

    thanx

You could try the recent DfES report “The Nature of Training and Motivation to Train in Small Firms” by John Kitching and Robert Blackburn of the Small Business Research Centre, Kingston University – further info from rob.hardcastle@dfes.gsi.gov.uk

    or

The Skills Task Force Research Paper 13 “Skills Issues for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises”, Steven Johnson, Middlesex University Business School. s.johnson@mdx.ac.uk. It isn’t quite what you want but has a good bibliography which might help.

Let me know if you find anything because I could do with some background stuff too!

Try the Federation of Small Businesses. They carry out quite a bit of research and everything they do focuses on SME’s and their operation.
They have a web site but not sure if it is :-
    http://www.fsb.co.uk OR
    http://www.fsb.org.uk
If you search for fsb you will get there.

Hi Chris, as far as i am aware businesses will train if it makes business sense to do so. Much research has been undertaken to quantify why businesses do not train, but little has been undertaken to actually assertain that businesses know that it makes ‘business sense’ to train. I’d be happy to talk to you further, feel free to e-mail.
