Equality & Diversity E-Learning

default-16x9

We are a public sector organisation and currently deliver a 3 hour Equality workshop to staff.

I am looking into offering it as e-learning as a way to get more people to take the course. I anticipate that it may only take 1 hour online.

However I am stuck as to where to start. Any suggestions on how I invesitgate the feasibility of this so I can make a clear proposal to our Senior Management Board

Initial questions that have struck me are:
Should we buy one off the shelf or design our own?
What sort of IT infrastructure do we need to support it?
How can I make sure the learning is effective?

I welcome your advice and recommendations.

We tried e learning which is ok but a subject like this does require interaction.E learning can reinforce learning with quizzes etc but can sometimes lend itself to the tick box approach,so often criticised when equality monitoring is cosmetic.I suggest you blend the existing workshops with e learning.I have the names of two outstanding companies in this field if you would like them

  2. A possible e-learning option to consider
    Hi Derek

My employer (a university) uses a network-based equality and diversity e-learning module developed by Marshall ACM. Their website is http://www.marshallacm.co.uk/. See also http://www.diversityintheworkplace.co.uk/. I have completed the module; the one my employer uses focuses on equality and diversity in relation to recruitment and employment. I am more interested in equality and diversity in relation to service users in the public services (health and social care) as I facilitate workshops in this area. It takes about an hour and includes an end of module test, the results of which are stored and can be accessed by appropriate staff. I would describe it as being of good quality, although I can’t compare it with other e-learning in this area as this is the only one I have tried. If you just want your staff to learn facts then it achieves that but, as Jennifer says, e-learning probably can’t go beyond that in terms of discriminatory attitudes and behaviour. Unless Marshall ACM have developed one that does that.

  3. Equality and Diversity eLearning for the UK Public Sector
    Hi Derek,

I work for an educational design Comapny called Aurion Learning. Aurion specialise in the design and development of ‘bespoke’ Equality and Diversity eLearning programmes for the Public Sector and have recently developed a blended Learning Programme for the Northern Ireland Civil Service to be accessed by over 28,000 employees. This project plays a key part in Northern Ireland’s high profile programme of change and reform under the theme “Embracing diversity” relating to Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act Equality and Diversity Legislation. In light of the proposed ammendments to much of the UK’s Equality / Racism legislation and the subsequent needs for Public sector Bodies to adhere to the new legislation re: introducing Disabiltiy / Racism Action plans Aurion have now established a generic framework of core content that can be customised to suit the specific needs of all Public Sector organisations throughout the UK.

If need be I forward on the Case Study and provide you with a link to the programme.
