I'm running a 1 hour training session for technical teams on high performing teams and what they look like. I have been asked to take them through the Forming etc model and in particular enable them to understand how to get from Forming to Performing in the quickest possible time. Any ideas for an interesting and interactive session would be gratefully received.

If you get them to consensus agree a table of “my rights and my (corresponding) responsibilities as a member of this team”….
Then introduce them to the GRIPS teamwork metric and get them to commit to continuing its use…
you will have put them through some valuable storming and norming in one hour.
I have done this with a number of teams (not in just an hour but in three) and it has proven to be an activity of great value
PS it works with tech and non tech teams and with virtual teams too

I’d tend to use the power of the team and intoduce a medium like Conversation Cafe http://www.theworldcafe.com/ or Open Space Technology http://www.creativestate.biz/OPEN%20SPACE%20TECHNOLOGY.htm and facilitate them to explore and define what; A) Performing looks like for this team, and b) What they need to do to move from Forming to Performing. Close the session with a clear plan and follow-up process.
Either of these processes will produce a more tangible and usable output than just facilitating a theory session to understand the model.
