Training & development manager course

I have recently been appointed as the T & D manager for our company (approx 400 employees).

What in your opinion is the best way forward in terms of relevant training courses or qualifications (bone at present in T & D)?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

  1. where are you now and where do you want to be?

    It all depends on where you are now and where you want to go…
    -are you completley new to T&D? What is your previous experience/exposure? In other words “What is your current level of skills?”

    -where do you need/want your career to go? What skills do you need to develop in order to do your job effectively today? Where do you want your career to go in the future and what will you need to learn to take it there?
    I may be too old or out of touch to interpret the phrase..”(bone at present in T&D)”…it might answer the first of my questions!

  2. Avoid Training Courses
    Hi Neil
    You don’t mention what role you were in before but I imagine that you learnt a lot about how to do the job by experiences other than training courses.
    As we move away from sheep dip training and into individualised learning you can role model this shift in your learning about the new role you have taken on.
    Some ideas to start with would be to arrange some interviews with other training managers in other industries to find out what they have learnt about the role. One of these might be willing to mentor you. You could also have discussions with key people in your business and get an idea about what they want from you.
    A really good starting place is the excellent book by Ian Cunningham “The Handbook of Work Based Learning”. As well as introducing an approach it gives loads of examples of different approaches you can use to develop both your skills and those of your employees.
