A colleague has just been telling me about a fantastic course he attended and I wondered if the things he mentioned are gradually coming to the fore in the training world. I hope so
He went on a training course and has remembered so much from it.There were no groundrule sessions lasting until lunchtime! No airey exercises being recycled and badged whatever the topic!
Instead he took part in tangible ice code breakers,exhibitions,real jury sessions based on real cases,pre course observatories,site visits and step by step audits. All related to subsequent action plans with the trainer keeping in touch.
There are so many rackets out in the training world that I told him I would share this news with TZ and ask if others can contribute to a debate.
It gives me hope.

New trends in training
Some new trends, not all of them good.
The ridiculous semantics argument of “creating a learning culture” rather than seeing training as a learning facilitation tool.
Employers still believing that everyone but themselves should be responsible for training staff.
Employers whingeing about general skills drop-offs whilst still expecting everyone to be a “graduate” – the most laughable job I’ve seen for a graduate was a post room clerk’s position for a firm in Southampton paying a whopping 12K.
Training being viewed as a nice to have non-strategically aligned tool.
CIPD still claiming to represent “trainers” whilst falling far short of the mark whilst educating them.
Good trends do abound though:
The efforts of the profession to become strategic business drivers rather than just a “support function”.
The efforts to demonstrate real ROI from training rather than pretending it can’t be measured.
The efforts of some providers (as in this case) to cut the “fluffy junk” from courses and deliver workable, useful, practical courses.
The gradual union of training and coaching so that they are united in pursuit of goals rather than conflicted.
The constant innovation by thousands of creative training people to drive continuous development of the profession and themselves.
An understanding of the essential nature of training needs analysis beginning to sink in to the corporate framework.

2. An ice code breaker is based on getting strangers in an office or other environment to talk in teams cracking a code sheet based on internal abbreviations,acronyms as well as external jargon
