We are running a Health at Work Day and one of our zones is going to be bookable 30-60 minute workshops on work-related health issues.... was thinking about things like Stress (tips for recognising/beating perhaps), Making the most of your Body Clock, Assertiveness.... and was looking for some content/activities as have only short space of time to put together!!!! Any idea?

  1. Work / Life Balance
Hi Laura – I guess it’s going to be difficult to cover much ground in an hour. I run a number of workshops on Work / Life Balance & Stress Management etc and I use a software programme called HeartMath which measures ‘stress’ in 6 minutes by measuring pulse and body rhythms. I then spend 15 minutes educating people how to train their ‘left / right brain’ to manage the ‘stress’ and to create a performance zone – we then do the software test again and the results are incredible. The system is used by the RAF pilots to help them to ‘get into the zone’and to operate at peak performance and to create a low stress environment. If you want any further information, please e-mail me.

  2. Taster Sessions
    Hi Laura

I run courses and taster sessions on Stress Management and Assertiveness…..in such as short space of time obviously you are going to be limited as to the amount of learning – making the sesions as interactive as possible would definately help. if you would like to discuss things further or want any specific ideas please feel free to email me on pennyawolff@hotmail.co.uk

A useful pattern for the workshops (given the time constraints) could be to make each one an interesting “Taster” session, for example a questionnaire, followed by a discussion (possibly in pairs or threes, less daunting and takes less time) with some good clear handouts on the topic to take away.
You’ll probably learn a lot about the working culture at the same time which can be followed up.

The bbc.co.uk site has a good quiz on “owls and larks” (google “owls and larks” and it comes up straight away) which would help with the Body Clock session

This site has a reasonable assertiveness questionnaire with self scoring and comments, that you could look at, and use as a basis (I don’t know if it’s copyright but you could check)

Some massage practitioners will come in and demonstrate back and shoulder “at desk” masage which people generally love. Ditto with Yoga. These could be useful for the Stress Topic.

Some people enjoy being asked to “Draw a picture of your situation” followed by “Draw a picture of how you’d prefer it to be”. Then talking about small steps to get from the first to the next. (Some people also hate drawing!)
