I have been asked to find out how we compare locally to other employers in terms of numbers of employees, size, location etc.; who are the biggest employers in our area etc. Can anyone point me in the direction of some data please? Many thanks.

There are a number of sources
1.Your local authority – especially at County level – should have a planning or economic development unit which has constructed a social and economic atlas for their municipal area.Largely drawn from
2. The out turn figures from the 2001 Census – Office of Population and Stats
3. Local Chambers of Trade or Commerce
4. Business Link and Skills Councils are another good source
5. CBI and TUC may be able to give you a sector focus but based on their memberships and interests
6. DTI
Good luck!

Online Sources
There are also many online sources. You may find that the local County / Borough Council has produced a local industry report that is ‘buried’ somewhere on their web site.
This is an area I do a lot of work for various people on. If you need any help by all means mail me with some specifics and I’ll see what I can do for you.

You could try the office of national statistics
for example http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_commerce/PA1003_2003/PA1003_2003.pdf
who claim to have 99% accuracy on company data
You could contact your local Businesslink or Chamber but having worked for both this is the site they will use to get their data anyway!

Another route to try…
Sometimes some recruitment agencies have stats for the local area. If your HR dept. use particular agencies you could try asking them?
