We are going through a system implementation and as part of this we need to transfer historical training records. Does anyone have any guidance on how long companies need to retain training records?
I would appreciate any answers accompany a reference to a source that I can refer to.

How long to keep records
On the CIPD website there is a factsheet which gives the recommended times and the reasons for the durations http://www.cipd.co.uk/subjects/hrpract/psnlrecrd/retrecords.htm?IsSrchRes=1
You do not need to be a member to access this.
In addition look at training records for H&S related training. In certain situations this information must be kept for 40 years!!

Keep them
Even the list published by the CIPD doesn’t cover everthing.
About 3 years ago I had an Employment tribunal case where I had to prove that a sacked employee had been given induction and operator training some 20 years previous. What made the problems even worse was than he had transferred to us under TUPE so we were having to get training records from anotehr employer. This would not have been covered by the CIPD guideance.
If you have your records computerised it and tehn arcieved then you can keep them for as long as you want. The only thing is ever time you change tarining records system you must not only transfer current records but also leavers.
