Assessment of job skills/competence

Has anyone any experience of training people in how to assess / observe people in the tasks they undertake on a daily basis to sign them off as competent. (NVQ style) but not within an NVQ D32 / D33 assessment process. I can send my assessors on a D32 course but they need to be assessing an NVQ and they are not.

Anyone had any experience of having done something similar and how they trained assessment skills when not undertaking NVQ specific training.

  1. Assessment techniques
    A number of our legal courses require assessments of areas like advocacy, client handling, case management etc. We use a technique to collect and record the information, as part of an assessment session. The NVQ assessment does not go far enough for our qualifications and therefore all our assessors have had to learn the new skills. The secret to the end result lies in a consistent process and manual and practical examples for the assessor to practice with before the real thing.

    The assessment is always carried out by an assessor who has extensive experience of the job/task being assessed. The assessment is done under working conditions at an agreed time.

    The assessment is transparent with aims and objectives and purpose being clearly outlined before the session. The action plan we use is part of the learning so the students know on what basis they will be assessed.

    The student has to identify the areas they feel they are weak in and then after the assessment there is a review one to one.

    We have good, often great results with this, some have it videoed so they can play it back and reflect. Most go on to do full professional exams and find the assessment of their office and people skills a good basis for their next level of studies.
